Smokey Bear
Poster Contest

In November, 2024, four members from The Friendly Garden Club did a presentation about Smokey Bear and how "Only YOU can prevent wildfires!" to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students at the Traverse City Montessori school.  Students listened to a story about Smokey Bear and how as a cub he was caught in a wildfire.  Luckily he was saved by a forest ranger.  But the message was clear--"It is important to be careful with fire!"  After the story, students were given instructions and a packet of drawing materials.  The students were instructed to draw a poster of their own creation about Smokey Bear communicating to others that "Only YOU can prevent wildfires!

The Friendly Garden Club members returned to Ms. Allison Hall's classroom on December 11 bringing with them a special guest--SMOKEY BEAR!  Smokey was accompanied by DNR officers Eric Knapp and Joshua Gray, who helped answer questions that the students had.  The poster winners for 1st grade was Vivian Vannest; 2nd, Leala Taula-Kurkewicz, & 3rd grade Penelope Losse.  All students received a gift bag from Smokey for participating in the poster contest.
