ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S GARDEN

The Grand Traverse Area Children’s Garden (GTACG) is a youth development organization in Traverse City, Michigan.  Since 1999 the garden has worked to educate and inspire youth with the knowledge of gardening, conservation and our environment.  The mission of the Grand Traverse Area Children’s Garden is to conduct and support educational programs and activities for youth through planned development of the gardens and the environmental resources with the area.

Established on the lake side of the Traverse Area District Library’s Main Branch, the Gardens were developed as an extension and enhancement of the walk-through Library Garden with the idea that plants affect every moment of our lives; to breathe, to eat, to heal, and enjoy.  With the support of the community, the Gardens were created as a beautiful environment for children of all ages to actively engage in hands-on gardening.  Garden programs offer an opportunity for children to learn sustainability, leadership and life skills while serving as good stewards protecting our community and the environment.

THE LEARNING GARDENS (Roots to Mouth (June-September)

Children of all ages and abilities spend the summer planning, planting, and cultivating organic gardens.  Community mentors and intern students with the support of The Friendly Garden Club provide education and support with a focus on nutrition.  The Gardens include raised beds and are wheelchair accessible.

Among the groups that use the Gardens are area schools, therapy groups, day cares, home schools, and other organizations.  The produce harvested is used in teaching healthy eating.  Food that is not consumed is donated to our local food rescue.  A solstice calendar depicts growing, cooking, eating, and giving back.  Pizzas made with vegetables grown by the children are cooked in our clay pizza oven.
